<BR>Finnish Concern Valio Oy has announced that it is reducing its personnel by 450, i.e. by almost 10%. Management says the Russian crisis is the reason for the action. Also, Valio's managers are attempting to reduce their expenses, in order to survive competition on the milk and milk products markets. In 1998 the volume of export by Finnish companies specialising in exporting food products fell by 5%, and this year improvements are not expected. This is the opinion of Pekki Hamalainena, chairman of the Union of Food Product Manufacturers. At present, Finnish food exporters are busy searching for new supply markets, Judging the speeches of managers at a food manufacturing seminar held in Helsinki at the end of January, the companies intend to increase their penetration into the markets of ten countries. These include European Union countries and the Baltics, as well as Poland and China. "China is particularly interesting," says Pekki Hamalainena. "Consumers in that country are partial to choosing foreign products."
