Telenor And Telia Merge

Norwegian Telenor AS and Swedish Telia, the largest Scandinavian telecommunications companies, are to merge.

<BR>Norwegian Telenor AS and Swedish Telia, the largest Scandinavian telecommunications companies, are to merge.<BR>A merger agreement has been signed by the Norwegian minister for transport and communications, and the Swedish industry minister. Both companies have daughter companies in St Petersburg and own share packets in St Petersburg businesses.<BR>The two state enterprises together control 95% of the telecommunications market of Northern Europe. <BR>In April 1998 Telenor opened a branch of its subsidiary, the telephone directory publisher Telenor Media, in St Petersburg. The company owns (via Telenor Invest) 12.74% of shares in the cellphone operator North-West GSM (Telia also owns a share packet in the company, of exactly the same size) and 50% of shares in the paging company Full Cry-Neva. At the end of last year a sensational deal was announced, whereby Telenor acquired a $160m strategic share packet (25% plus one share) in the Moscow company Vimpelcom (the largest Russian cellphone operator, working under the trademark 'Bee Line').
