<BR>At the beginning of the year, the Petersburg Television Station 11 began transmission of a new private television network TNT, started up by the Media-Most Group. Because TNT is transmitted throughout Russia by satellite, regional stations are able to broadcast national programming while using their own local commercial advertising. In January, 45 to 50 regional stations are expected to be included in the list of TNT subscribers. And by the end of 1998 TNT's management intends to expand its network to two hundred television stations. The new network has developed its programming to cater to the tastes of the entire family. Viewers will be offered a variety of entertainment including TV serials, talk shows, educational shows and films. Also, premium regional programming will be included in the network's line-up. Channel 11's commercial broadcasting will be realized by the media company Media International. It was thought that broadcasting TNT's programs could potentially solve channel 11 s programming saturation problem and, at the same time, help boost its local ratings. Thus, on January 1 the station began transmitting 17 hours of TNT's programming. The head station will transmit all programming in a ready format to regional broadcasters to reach the airwaves at the local level. In addition, a number of time slots are allotted for local broadcasting. Local stations, thus, make money by filling these slots with advertising while still receiving TNT network programming. In TNT's case, as the network's management confirmed, these time slots allotted to regional broadcasting stations were discussed in depth with the local programming stations. The stations main wish was to be granted more spots during prime time for the transmission of local news programs. TNT contributes to Channel 11's entertainingly light side of the station s broadcasting content. The task of filling the rest of the time slots with substantial programming is left up to Channel 11 itself. According to the station's head programmer Sergey Podgorbunsky, local programming for these open time slots still remains to be found. Consequently, for the time being central national programming will be placed in the majority of these spots.
