<BR>The program, which is the only one of its kind in Russia, will support tourism development in CIS countries. Financed by the European Union, the first stage of the program will be carried out during the next three years at a cost of 2 mln ECU. In particular, program assistance will be directed towards the Federal Committee on Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Education and, in Petersburg, the Committee for Tourism and Recreation Development. A consortium of three European companies-Tansek (Belgium), Sert (Ireland) and Akkor (France)will head the program. The assistance project foresees the creation of a national tourism training center which will bring closer together the tourism industry and Russian and European higher learning institutions. Also, career training programs in five areas of the tourism industry will make up a part of EU support. These areas are travel agency and hotel management, development of recreation and health centers, excursion business development, management of regional government tourist agencies and educational support of university-level tourism instructors wishing to improve their qualifications. By the year 2000 as many as 4,500 persons are expected to have participated in EU sponsored training programs. In Russia three regions represented by Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sochi will be first to receive support during the initial phase of the program. At present, reference materials are being prepared for the first classes to be held in fall of 1998.
