<BR>The St. Petersburg legislative committee passed a law "about a job quota for youth". According to this law, 8000 jobs will be created annually at Petersburg enterprises. According to information from the Population Occupational Committee in 1998 city administration promises to grant more than 26 billion rubles from the budget for social programs including 16 billion rubles for youth occupation and 7.5 billion rubles for securing temporary (seasonal) occupations for people. In 1997 nearly 13 billion rubles was granted for creating jobs. Vice governor Vyacheslav Sherbakov announced that in 1998 the youth will be given work at the expense of participating Petersburg companies in the assimilation of the gas shelf which will be carried out by the company Rosshelf. At the same time the vice governor noted that in connection with the military reforms Petersburg is expecting the arrival of not less than 20,000 discharged military personnel of prime working age. On October 1, 1997 there were 34,100 officially registered unemployed.
