A decree issued by the Russian government concerning all goods brought into the territory of the Russian Federation states that all non-food products must have information written in Russian. According to the resolution, starting July 1, 1998 the sale of imported non-food goods that do not have Russian language information written on them will be outlawed. The presence of Russian language information will be the responsibility of the organizations and individual businesses that import goods into the RF. Information about the goods including the different types and their distinguishing features should contain the following Russian language information: the name of the product, the name of the country in which it was produced, the company which produced it (the company name can be designated with letters of the Latin alphabet), the general properties and characteristics, and the rules and conditions necessary for effective and safe use of the product. The information should be placed somewhere on the package or label of the product, included in the technical documents or instructions that are issued with the product or in any other place that is acceptable for individual packaged products. The standards for how these products will be marked should be elaborated by the responsible parties by January 1, 1998.
