<BR>Western investors' interest in Russia has not vanished, but significantly decreased. This was the conclusion of a survey carried out by Interfax-AIF among the participants of the Moscow conference 'New Mechanisms of Financing in the New Russia', on 7 and 8 October.<BR>Bernard Sonneveld, regional manager for Europe and the CIS at ING Barings, considers that, "the bank's clients large western companies will not leave their Russian partners, who mostly represent an irreplaceable sector of the Russian economy."<BR>However, he does not deny that they will demand more guarantees from banks for carrying out external trade operations in Russia. Sonneveld expects to see an increase in the volume of insurance and guarantee operations, as fewer deals are struck with Russian contractors.<BR>A representative of a major European bank, who asked to remain anonymous, noted in an interview with Interfax-AIF's journalist, that "many banks are so scared by what has been happening in Russia, and have made such massive losses, that they do not want to continue operations here under any conditions."
